The Drum


Daphne Kalotay is the author of the novel Russian Winter (HarperCollins), which was a finalist in the James Jones First Novel competition and is being published in 19 foreign translations. Her first book, the story collection Calamity and Other Stories (KnopfDoubleday), was short-listed for the 2005 Story Prize. A MacDowell fellow who has also received fellowships from the Christopher Isherwood Foundation and Yaddo, Daphne holds an MA in Creative Writing and a PhD in Modern & Contemporary Literature, both from Boston University, and has taught literature and creative writing at BU, Skidmore College, Grub Street, and Middlebury College.  She lives in Brookline and welcomes online visitors at or
